Poor tyre tread and balding tyres are a major safety hazard on the road.
When your tyre tread depth is less than 3mm your wet grip is dramatically reduced!
Reduced control in wet weather is just one of the dangers of worn tyres, which can include unresponsive handling and loss of air pressure.
Low tread can also increase your risk of punctures - which can be tricky to deal with if caught out on remote roads with patchy cell phone reception.

Testing your tyre tread depth with a 20c coin
An easy way to measure your tyre’s tread depth is by placing a New Zealand 20 cent coin into one of the grooves in the centre of your tyre. If you can see the whole of the number 20, then that tyre has 2mm or less tread left and it’s time to think about replacing your tyres to ensure your vehicle complies with road safety standards.
When should I replace my tyres?
Legally you are required to replace your tyres when your tread depth wears below 1.6mm, however we recommend maintaining a tread depth of at least 3mm to ensure optimal tyre performance, especially in wet weather.
As your tyres’ tread wears, their ability to disperse water reduces. This means when conditions are wet, older tyres can increase the time it takes for your car to come to a stop.
